Why Nurture the Spirit of I&E?

For individual
A strong spirit of I&E will equip our young with the strength of character to deal with life’s challenges and respond to complex changes in our society and country.

For society
To meet the challenges of global economic development and international competition, Singapore needs people who are willing to try new and untested routes, without fear of failure; people who are prepared to be flexible, to multitask, to take responsibility and to inspire teams and organisations to take leaps of innovation.

What Is This Spirit of I&E?

It is a core set of life skills and attitudes that we want to develop in our students.
  • A spirit of inquiry and thinking originally
  • A willingness to do something differently, even if there is a risk of failure
  • A ruggedness of character, the ability to bounce back and try again
  • A willingness to stand in a team, lead a team and fight as a team
  • A sense of “giving back” to the community

As we seek to nurture the spirit of I&E, schools should be guided by the 5 key tenets:

  1. Every child, not a few
  2. Celebrate, not mandate
  3. Flexibility, with discipline
  4. Signpost, not scorecards
  5. A journey, not a destination

Key Ideas about Nurturing the I&E Spirit

It is about…

It is not just about…

  • Giving space to our young to develop passion for what they do, and realise their unique talents and abilities. This requires prioritising and balancing the range of emphases, so that time and space can be freed up.

  • Getting our young to question as they learn and develop a certain boldness as they do so, never being satisfied with existing explanations and knowledge.

  • Exposing our young to new experiences, to help them face up to difficulties, persevere and overcome challenges through making the most of the CCA curriculum framework.

  • Imbuing in our young a sense of “giving back” to the community.
  • Teaching students how to run businesses.

  • Embarking on additional programmes specifically for I&E.
