Better skills for handling community development projects and academic work projects and opportunities to engage heart and soul. These are some of the benefits that a new programme offers all trainee teachers come July 2005.

Graduate teachers raring to go
Teachers come from the ranks of young graduates and mid-career professionals.
All new National Institute of Education (NIE) trainees will have the opportunity to take part in experience-based project work. This is an initiative under the Group Endeavours in Service Learning (GESL) for foundation training programmes.

Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education, announced this important development during the NIE Teachers' Investiture Ceremony on 15 January 2005.

He said that the programme "will equip trainee teachers with the necessary background and experience to take on subsequent leadership roles in their schools’ community involvement projects and academic work projects. More importantly, apart from acquiring and developing project management skills, these teachers will bring back with them greater adaptability and compassion."

About 250 Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) recipients were warmly welcomed into the teaching profession at the ceremony. Lieutenant General Lim Chuan Poh, Permanent Secretary, MOE and Chairman, NIE Council presented graduands with their diplomas.
