Work Attachment @ NHC

By Rozaina binte Rusli, Teacher, Chestnut Drive Secondary
-
A stint during the holidays in December 2004 with the National Heart Centre helped a teacher gain insights into her roles in her family and at work. It was an affirming experience and even made her wax lyrical!

It was one fine day
When she read about the TWA.
Teachers were allowed to be attached to different institutions
To learn more about the different career options
Available here
In Singapore.

The Medical Social Services Department
A good place to start
To learn the basics
Of counselling and social work.
It was during this three-week attachment
That she found out more.

She reflected on herself as a teacher
She thought hard about herself as a daughter.
She went through what she had done
As a second ‘parent’ to her ‘kids’
And learnt to appreciate the efforts
That she had made
For everyone

She began to be more appreciative of others
And less critical of her students
She realised they are after all, teenagers
Who still need a lot of direction, guidance and love
And who else can give them that in school?
It’s no one else
But educators, and teachers
Like herself
