At the recent Singapore Schools Sports Councils (SSSC) Annual General Meeting, Education Minister Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam commended schools for making good progress in the battle against obesity and stressed the need for students to be actively involved in sports. Speaking to over 800 educators who attended the event held on 14 January 2005 at Anderson Junior College, he said that the role of sports went "beyond developing fitness, athletic and games skills".

During the event, 301 schools received Gold and Silver Trim and Fit (TAF) Awards. One Centralised Institute and 14 Junior Colleges were also awarded the MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance Award (MPFPA). Millennia Institute received the Best Performer Award while Pioneer JC bagged the Most Improved Award.

Seemanti Mukherjee
Inspired by her PE teacher to lose weight, Seemanti Mukherjee of Anderson Junior College aims to become a dietician.
For one student, her concerned PE teacher motivated her to keep fit. Seemanti Mukherjee, 17, of Anderson Junior College said that she had been a TAF student since Sec 4.

"I've never really been bothered by my weight even though I was in the TAF Club. We ate oily food at home and I didn't exercise much. But when I went to JC, my PE teacher, Ms Ong, showed me how important it was to be healthy. What touched me was that after school, she took me to the supermarket. She pointed out all the food items I should and shouldn't be eating and explained why. Now I want to lose weight and my goal is to become a dietician."
