Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education said, "Within
each of you is a fund of knowledge and wisdom that must be harnessed
so that it can be passed on to the next generation of teachers.
This fund of knowledge is not only about know-how in teaching
but also the ethos and values of the Education Service."
He announced that refinements will be introduced in the Teaching
Track from April 2005 to provide younger officers with an opportunity
to make significant contributions and build up their portfolios
of experience earlier in their careers. This development recognises
the contributions that officers in the three career tracks
leadership, specialist and teaching
make to the Education Service.
Mr Shanmugaratnam was speaking at the MOE Investiture Ceremony
for the 2004 National Day Awards for 702 officers on 7 February
2005. Apart from this group, 52 other officers from the education
fraternity received their awards from President S R Nathan in
November 2004. Among them was former Director-General of Education,
Mr Wee Heng Tin, who received the Meritorious Service Medal
in recognition of his major contributions to the transformation
of the Singapore education system.
