Flexibility and Tenacity Essential for I&E

By Mr Benjamin Seethor Chee Mang, English and Chemistry Teacher, Ping Yi Secondary School
-
Benjamin Seethor organised his own work attachment to New Zealand in response to the call for a change in mindset to promote Innovation and Enterprise (I&E). He has actively started to actualise his dream to build international Web Communities of students.

How did I initiate my overseas TWA?
In March 2003, I was invited to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) eLearning Summit in Taiwan to share on "IT in Education at Ping Yi Secondary". I met Ross Whitcher and Harvey Calder, directors of Communities Online, an international organisation based in New Zealand. I’ve been in constant communication with Ross and Harvey via email. Upon their invitation, I took up an attachment with Communities Online under the overseas TWA scheme with the approval of my Cluster Superintendent.

What have I learnt in Wellington,
New Zealand?

I&E Ideas
I have learnt that I&E requires flexibility in conceptual thinking. To inspire creative thinking, teachers and students should be encouraged to dream dreams. I hope schools will increasingly build a more conducive I&E environment so that teachers and students can explore their dreams more earnestly, thereby making their dreams a reality.

I&E Character
I have been very impressed with the I&E trait of never giving up. If we have tried and failed, we should not give up but look for more creative ways to solve the problem. Tenacity is a critical trait of the I&E personality.

What next?
My initiative of educational collaboration between New Zealand and Singapore is a dream. I received inspiration when I visited Te Papa Museum of New Zealand. Captivated by the exotic and exciting Maori cultural displays at Te Papa, I thought…“it would be interesting if I could help to bring rural, tribal Maori students into close virtual contact with urban Singaporean students…and they can study, learn and share with one another.”

My dream may not be easily realised, success may not come quickly, this is all part of I&E. But I will keep trying and will look for opportunities to succeed. I will also look for more I&E pursuits in the years ahead.
