The World of Mathematics

By Ms Tan Lay Leng, Tanjong Katong Primary School
-

God writes the Universe with Mathematics.
Isn't it fantastic!
There's one moon and one golden sun,
A zillion stars and a trillion plants!
Countless stems, rhizomes and roots.

Roots! Cube roots, simple roots and complex ones.
To some they are puzzling, to others they are fun!
Square roots are not that daunting,
At least they keep squares from moving!
Let's not forget the powerful zero.
Its power is one to behold!
The difference between 1000 and 10000 is a '0',
But the value is 9000, lo!

Then pi = 22/7  , which is 3.14159265358979.
But pie is a delicious dessert, eat it hot!
3 is prime, 5 is prime, 7 is prime, but 9 is not,
11 is prime, 13 is prime, but 15 is not!

Did you know that Mathematicians make great artists?
They use patterns with great ease!
If 1 x 1 is 1, 11 x 11 is 121, 111 x 111 is 12321,
Now let's try this :
111 111 111 x 111 111 111.
Game for one more line?
If 9 x 9 is 81, 99 x 99 is 9801, 999 x 999 is 998001,
Can you write down 999 999 999 x 999 999 999?

Talking about nines and lines.
Parallel lines are lines that do not meet
Unless they are folded and bent.
Perpendicular lines are lines that meet at 90 degrees
Unless you lean against them!

Having toured the World of Mathematics, what is the conclusion?
Mathematics is made of 50% formulae, 50% proofs and 50% imagination!
