A wide range of innovative and interesting nominations were received for this year's Innergy Awards, ranging from a para para dance machine derivative to a significant scientific process for DNA identification. Fourteen awards were given out this year.

The Innergy Awards were set up to
Recognise staff who come up with innovative ideas and have spent time developing, testing and/or implementing them;
Appreciate staff who have come up with innovations that have brought about significant benefits that contribute to MOE’s mission; and
Encourage more MOE officers to be innovative and creative in the workplace.

There are three categories of Innergy Awards, namely:
Innopreneur Award – Innovative ideas that have been implemented and have the potential to be commercialised
Innovator Award – Innovative ideas that have been successfully implemented
Experimentor Award – Innovative ideas which have been tested but found unsuitable for implementation.

The 14 Innergy Awards this year are as follows: two for the Innopreneur, nine for the Innovator and three for the Experimentor Awards.

Title: DX Solution for Genomic DNA Extraction from Human Cheek Cells
School: Dunman Secondary School
Team leader/members: Ms Lim Guat Hong, Mr Daniel Lim Poh Yeong, Miss Christine Sim

Extracted DNA provides the basis of many molecular experiments. However, the current method of extracting DNA is tedious, time consuming (three to 24 hours) and expensive. The team developed a rapid method of isolating human chromosomal DNA from cheek cells. The procedure now only takes less than 30 mins to extract DNA and costs a fraction of commercially available methods.
Title: Transparent Miracle — Automated Batch Transparency Cleaner
School: Anglo-Chinese Junior College
Team Leader: Mr S. Ramasamy

Attached to a computer, the fully automated batch transparency cleaner works just like a printer. The device has the capability to feed, clean, and dry up used write-on transparencies at the rate of 3 transparencies per minute – similar to the printing speed of most bubble jet printers. Unfortunately, due to limitations in the stepper motor of the cleaner, it took a long time to dry the transparencies. The cleaning was also not even. In addition, with the move towards IT in schools, the popularity of transparencies has also fallen as more teachers switch to PowerPoint slides. Hence, the team decided not to implement the project.
