Fifteen Chinese Language (CL) teachers took the spotlight on 27 May 2005 when they were presented with the annual Inspiring Chinese Language Teachers Award. The ceremony was held in conjunction with the launch of World Book Fair 2005.

The award recognises CL teachers who have been exemplary in teaching Chinese language and culture in 2004. It is presented to teachers who inspired students to develop an appreciation for the language and culture.

The 15 recipients were selected on the following criteria: (Click to read more)
Teaching methods;
Ability to harness technology, tailor lessons to suit students’ standards, use interactive methods and capture students’ attention;
Dedication to language and culture;
Integration with school environment; and
Plans and vision of their roles in future.

Principals were also interviewed to understand how well nominees cooperated with colleagues and themselves.

The organisers and panel of five judges had to pore through 1550 nominations this year, a record number since the awards’ inception in 1998.

Dr Ng Eng Hen
Dr Ng Eng Hen, Second Minister for Education and Minister for Manpower, speaking at the award presentation.
In his speech, Guest-of-Honour Dr Ng Eng Hen, Second Minister for Education and Minister for Manpower, stated that schools should “strive to create lifetime learners and readers in their students – those who learn and read for personal fulfilment, and who will continue to read and educate themselves throughout their lives. And not just school time learners and readers – those who only learn and read within their prescribed texts and just for the purpose of doing well academically.”

He was impressed that age was not a barrier to passionate teaching, given that recipients’ teaching experiences ranged from less than two years to more than 30 years. Dr Ng said, “I am heartened that… older, more experienced teachers are not resting on their laurels but (are) continually improving their teaching strategies and still have the dedication to do the best by their students.”

Each award recipient received a trophy and cash prize of $500. They are also slated to attend an educational study tour to China during the November school holidays to learn about the country’s education system and teaching techniques.

Two teachers were presented with the National Outstanding Chinese Language Lesson Plan Awards. Sponsored by the Lee Foundation, the Awards are organised by Lianhe Zaobao and co-organised by Singapore Chinese Middle School Teachers’ Association and Singapore Chinese Teachers’ Union.
