A School Day – Work Plan Seminar 2005

“Touching Hearts, Engaging Minds – Preparing Our Learners for Life”. Participants at this year's MOE Work Plan Seminar heard this call being reiterated in the keynote speech by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education and in the Principal's address by Ms Seah Jiak Choo, Director-General of Education. The upcoming issue of Contact – the Teachers' Digest will elaborate on the “Teach Less, Learn More” (TLLM) framework and key recommendations.

Skit on TLLM
A colourful skit on TLLM.

The unusual structure of the seminar choreographed as a 'school day' enabled participants to envision themselves in the shoes of learners. At the core of all the messages, video clips and the humorous skit (a joint presentation by Admiralty Primary, Riverside Secondary and Innova Junior College) was the serious deliberation of how schools could take ownership of the TLLM approach.

Ms Seah said, “We want our schools to shift from a focus on quantity to quality, from structure to students, from good grades to good character. There are no model answers.”

She further pointed out that each school operated in a unique context, with its repertoire of resources and sets of constraints. The school-centric approach would be emphasised with support from MOE to help prepare students for life in today's fast-changing environment. In turn, principals needed to adopt a teacher-centric approach so that teachers would be encouraged to implement new ideas.

Teaching students, not subjects
Mrs Lim Lai Cheng
Mrs Lim Lai Cheng, Principal, Temasek Junior College
The TLLM strategy is something which all professional educators will welcome. At the core of it is engaged learning and effective teaching. Given the space and the resources as well as the top-down support from MOE, I am confident that teachers will re-appraise what they have been doing thus far and better shape their pedagogy to match their philosophy. Instilling the right values and attitudes towards life is something educators do, instinctively. The call to enhance character development will sit well with teachers because primarily, we are teachers of students, not subjects.
Making learning meaningful and mentally stimulating

I fully support TLLM, the emphasis on teaching better, more creatively and better meeting the needs of pupils, which are so varied. Teachers have always tried to teach in such a way as to make learning meaningful, and mentally stimulating. However, this requires a lot of time. The support for the school is certainly something very welcome as it gives teachers the time needed to do what they would like to do, i.e. spend time planning their lessons better, interacting with students, engaging them in thinking, stimulating their minds, encouraging and inspiring pupils to achieve their fullest potential.
Creating more time and space for teachers

TLLM is a call for teachers to improve on their teaching by making their lessons more engaging for their students. This, in fact, has been a challenge I set for myself ever since I began teaching. As such, I am glad to know that MOE will be providing us with "top-down support". I am especially excited to know that in developing teachers, MOE is planning to create more time and space for us.
