In March 2005, YJC became the first junior college to offer
the YJC-UC University Preparation Programme (UPP) for JC1 students.
This course is taught by lecturers from the Asiainstitut of
Management. Under the programme, students pursue the course
concurrently with their 'A' levels and eventually will be awarded
a Diploma in Business Administration. In addition, students
will gain direct entry into the second-year undergraduate Bachelor
of Business Administration studies at three Australian universities,
namely, University of Canberra (UC), University of Western Australia
and University of Queensland.
This programme, which is unique to YJC, provides students with
more options. At the end of their JC education, they will graduate
as GCE 'A' level certificate and diploma holders who have intellectual
and leadership capacity as well as good knowledge of business
theories and practices. In addition, those who gain direct entry
to any of the above-mentioned universities will be able to complete
their university education in a shorter time and join the workforce
ahead of their counterparts.

Careful considerations have been taken by YJC to ensure that
the course schedule does not coincide with major college examinations
and the GCE 'AO' and 'A' level examinations. This will allow
students to manage their time and do well in both the UPP and
their 'A' levels.
The first batch of YJC-UC UPP students comprises 16 JC1 students.
They started their first module on Introduction to Management
during the June holidays and completed the course in mid August
this year. Students were very positive about the UPP.
It seemed natural for 16-year-old
Pang Yubin to join this course as her ambition
is to be an entrepreneur. She said, “I have interest
in a business course and I think that the school
is offering me a good opportunity to acquire more
knowledge in this field.”
Her schoolmate, Kow Pei Ling, who is studying
Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, shares her
sentiments. She has set her sights on getting
an MBA and be a business consultant. “I joined
the course out of interest and do not find the
extra classes a load,” she said.
Although 17-year-old Christopher Puan Ziyang intends
to become a marine biologist, he has also decided
to take this diploma course to expand his horizon.
He said, “I saw the offer of a diploma course
as an opportunity for me to expand my field of
study, considering that I do not intend to take
any arts subject during my course of study in
the ‘A’ levels.” |

A special incentive will be granted to students who do well
in the programme. YJC-UC UPP students who do well would qualify
for a sponsored trip to the UC Australian campus in December
2006. |
