Teaching is not only
about sharing knowledge. It is also about sharing good values
to help mould the character of students. That is where Co-Curricular
Activities (CCA) come in. Dennis Teo, a teacher officer in an
Uniformed Group, tells how his involvement in his school’s
National Civil Defence Cadet Corp (NCDCC) OC Unit has enhanced
not only his own personal growth, but also that of his student
charges.
I believe that learning must be centred on good values
and the teaching of these values should be extended beyond the
classroom setting. Co-Curricular Activities is the other platform
that provides opportunities to influence our students’
values and mould their character.

Through a wide variety of school and HQ-based activities and
programmes, NCDCC has provided me with the avenue to inculcate
in my students good values such as care and concern for fellow
students, discipline, courage and commitment.
All of NCDCC lessons are centred on saving lives and protecting
property and our cadets have come to know that these are noble
acts which cannot be performed without a heart of love and kindness
for their fellow men.
As a teacher, I am glad to be in a position to impart life-saving
skills to my students and great satisfaction comes from knowing
that my students are able to help save lives when the need arises.

Being an NCDCC officer allows me many opportunities to grow
in a personal capacity, chief of which is to learn how to lead.
In leading the NCDCC unit, I have internalized how to organize
the unit, craft training plans, nurture students with leadership
potential and help them realize their fullest potential.
It was immensely gratifying to see cadets who have graduated,
volunteering to serve the school as NCDCC Cadet Lieutenants
and making the weekly commitment to help train and lead the
school unit. These altruistic individuals, whom I call citizens
of the school, are testimony that Uniformed Groups provide good
grounding to our youths to learn responsibility, commitment,
discipline and care - values that will stand them in good stead
for the rest of their lives. |
