Just as the Masterplan for IT in Education aims to promote the use of IT in schools, Intelligent Nation 2015 or iN2015 is a 10-year master plan to grow the infocomm sector, and chart the use of technology for work, life and leisure.

Winners on stage at Express IT! iN2015.
The "Express IT! iN2015" competition was jointly organised by Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), Singapore infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF) and the Singapore Computer Society (SCS) and supported by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Digital Life. An exhibition for schools and consumer focus groups, participants were required to illustrate their dreams and insights on how technology will enable them to work, learn and play in the year 2015.

A total of 3,058 entries were received for the primary, secondary/pre-university and open categories. From mobile classrooms, global learning to wearable communication devices, students like Kean Lin Weijun and Dave Chua Hong Kai are confident that IT is here to stay in the learning process.

3 Winners’ Dreams of how IT would be used in Learning
From Fuhua Primary, Dave’s detailed essay paints an exciting picture of the school of the future where lessons can be conducted through webcam when the teacher is ill and with laptops which type and record discussions between students automatically, and virtual experiments conducted on laptops to dissect insects to understand their body structures.

Dave Chua of Fuhua Primary sums up his thoughts about IT and learning with his entry.
Justifying why most of his ideas are credible and not just lofty suggestions, Dave said, “My ideal school setting is a feasible blueprint for modern schools of the 21st century. Technology can help us achieve things that are almost impossible or beyond our grasp.”

Kean Lin from Xingnan Primary “dreamt about what the computer, IT tools and gadgets such as the PDA can do to help us learn better” through his comic strip which won him the first prize in the Primary School Category.

In ‘intellectual learning’ in Tampines Junior College’s (TPJC) multimedia entry, team member Liang Yau highlighted intellectual games that “integrate gameplay with the syllabus” and suggests holograms for easier understanding of topics like molecular structures.

The TPJC team found their inspiration from the media. “TV programmes and movies helped us envision the future as mechanical intensive,” Liang Yau revealed. “Generally, the ideas for our entry were generated from what we saw in our daily lives and we brainstormed for innovative solutions to tackle or improve the situation.”

Of IT and Learning
Initially freehand drawings, Kean Lin’s entry developed into a unique storyboard after the pictures were scanned and coloured on the computer. He explained: “I applied various colouring techniques that I learnt in my Co-Curricular Activity. During the competition, my instructor taught me more techniques and now, I understand features of the digital software better!”

Fuhua Primary’s team now realised how efficient learning with IT can be. Dave elaborated: “Technology enables us to study at any time and place. IT may also help us to speed up our learning journey as everything will be at our finger tips!”

The TPJC team feel that “IT has the ability to enhance graphical presentation, allowing students to feel more refreshed and entertained in school. Colours, videos and animations are ways which can liven up our school life and help us learn!”
