Is it possible for students to choose school programmes based on their interests? Jurong Junior College’s Interest Directed Programme (IDP) is on-going proof that it is.
It is 4pm on a Thursday afternoon at 800 Corporation Road. Though late in the afternoon, Jurong Junior College (JJ) is still abuzz with a flurry of activities. A Year 1 student, Emily, is getting ready for the Inline Skating Course that she will be attending in college. She hopes to overcome a phobia of falling and acquire the basics of inline skating within the next 4 weeks. Kirpal, an avid tennis fan, changes out of his uniform and dons his sports attire, heading enthusiastically towards the courts for his Beginner Tennis lessons.

In another part of the building, Azman, whose ambition is to be a life-science researcher, is making his way excitedly to the laboratory for the Nanoscience Course. Li Ying is also ambling to the classroom for her Basic Conversational Malay lessons. She looks forward to using the language when she goes on the college student-exchange programme to Indonesia in June.
The JJ Revised Curriculum Framework
These courses and many others, such as Song Writing, Video Production, Effective Public Speaking and Financial Management, are part of the Interest Directed Programme (IDP) offered by JJ as part of its endeavour towards providing holistic education for their charges. Since the IDP was launched in 2005 with the objective to help students develop a life-long hobby, JJ has made available more than 30 such courses.

The IDP is part of JJ Revised Curriculum Framework and represents a fitting response to MOE's call to Teach Less Learn More. Alongside the Institution Governed Programme, the instructional programmes following the A-Level curriculum, and the People Development Programme, a series of training that aims to infuse sound moral values in our students, the IDP plays a vital, but often neglected, role of cultivating the students' interests and passions.

Bringing In, Going Beyond
In line with the college student-centred thrust, the availability of the different IDP is strictly responsive to students' demand for these courses.
The college's Bringing In Going Beyond Strategy allows for expertise and programmes not immediately available within the college to be outsourced to external educational partners and specialised institutions. The courses are very often brought in at subsidised rates for JJ students. JJ has also set aside bursaries for students who require financial assistance so that every student will have an equal opportunity to pursue his passion.
Each course is organised into modules and usually runs between 4 to 8 weeks across Terms 1 to 3. Students can choose to continue from the elementary classes to the intermediate and advanced stages. Upon completion of the advanced level, students will receive a certificate awarded by JJ and the conducting institution.
