When Serangoon Secondary School students attended a TAF Camp, they learnt that losing weight can be both easy and believe it or not, fun as well!

Recently, Serangoon Secondary School organised a TAF (Trim and Fit) Camp, jointly supported by the Health & Fitness Club & the PE Department.

Our student leaders briefing the Health & Fitness Club members.
The first order of business at the camp was for the students to attend a talk on adopting healthy eating habits and making healthy food choices. The students then got to sample some healthy but tasty snacks. This was followed by the screening of a motivational video entitled If I Can, So Can You produced by the Health Promotion Board (HPB), which related how some students were motivated to lose weight.

Students then set their weight loss targets and took part in a hands-on activity: an affirmation and a pledge to do their best to lose weight. One of the materials used was an HPB booklet titled Feel Good, Look Great! With keen determination, the students set deadlines for themselves and planned their own exercises.

They were also introduced to a fun and effective way of keeping fit: Bhangra Robicz! Through a video by the Singapore Heart Foundation, the students were simultaneously entertained and motivated to lose weight and keep fit.

Armed with just a clue and a map of the zoo, the students go all out in a race against time to complete their task.
The Amazing SeranZOOn Race
A highlight of the TAF Camp was a trip to the zoo for a SeranZOOn Race. In this activity, the students were divided into teams and instructed to compete against each other to see who was the fastest and the “smartest” of the lot!

Similar to the Amazing Race concept, our Race took place at the zoo as we thought it would be an enjoyable Learning Journey for the students. In fact, teacher-in-charge Mrs Thia commented that she was glad to see the students having a great time and hoped to make this a yearly affair.

“I think we should go this way!”
The students had clues to find the different stations and they performed different tasks related to fitness and the zoo. Not only did this give them a chance to learn more about animals, but they also worked up a good sweat while moving from station to station. Through the feedback forms given at the end, the students revealed that they enjoyed themselves at the zoo and would like the camp to be an annual affair.

Achieving Different Goals
The teachers hope that the activity tied in with the school’s vision as “The Home of Achievers”. They are confident that the students will do their best to achieve their acceptable weight. Furthermore, the school would like the students to develop holistically and become life-long learners. That is, after all, the school’s mission.

May the road to fitness always be this enjoyable!
