As part of its Children’s Day celebrations, Elias Park Primary School sought to find its first “PEACE Idol”!

As the Peace Idol, Daniel (centre, wearing sash) will work with other student leaders in the school to promote the school's PEACE values.
On September 29, Daniel Lim, a Primary 5 student of Elias Park Primary School (EPPS) was declared the school’s first ‘PEACE Idol’. A brainchild of the P5 prefects, “PEACE Idol” was a search for a role model like Mother Teresa for EPPS students and staff. They came up with the creative proposal after their ‘Living Values’-led Leadership Course.

Four idol ‘hopefuls’ were short-listed from among 30 pupils after a first round of nominations by their peers in August and a second round of interviews by a panel of teachers from the Pupil Development (PD) Department. They campaigned for votes by presenting their project proposals to their schoolmates. P5 pupils cast a total of 290 votes and nearly half went to Daniel who was declared the eventual PEACE Idol.

The prefects wanted the PEACE Idol awards to motivate and recognise outstanding Eliasians who ‘lived’ the school’s core values and crafted the PEACE acronym for Eliasians to exhibit in their daily lives:

P eace - be in harmony with self and work in unity with others.
E xcellence - be the best that we can be, seeking continuous improvement in all that we do
A daptability - constantly seek new ideas, adapt to changes and
be ready to take on challenges
C are - love people and show care for them.
E ven -handedness - treat everyone equally and with respect.

The Idol’s Duties
During his one-year reign, Daniel will oversee a peace-building project focusing on character development. He declared in a media interview,“ I’m a very peaceful person and really want to be a good role model to all my classmates and friends. I feel I am ready for this responsibility and to be more like Mother Teresa every day.”

P5 pupil Daniel Lim receives the honour of being Elias Primary School's first ever Peace Idol!
He believes that he and the other student leaders can have a positive influence on their peers’ attitudes and behaviour. He will also act as a ‘conflict manager’ and work with class monitors to help his peers to resolve conflicts or interpersonal disputes. His exemplary conduct and deeds could be used as examples whenever teachers seize ‘teachable moments’ to emphasise the PEACE Values.

Upholding Core Values
He also desires all ‘Eliasians’ to display very high sportsmanship qualities such as “Victory with Humility”, and “Defeat with Pride” during CCA and Sports. He proposes to achieve these by providing every pupil with a ‘Values Card’. Each pupil puts into practice these values daily in school and at home and records the values they have practised. Subsequently, pupils will share their experiences in class. Daniel believes that this will help pupils to acquire skills to manage self, and relate to others .To reward values-based words and actions; one outstanding student from each class will be presented with a certificate every term.

Daniel’s other idea to help promote his school's core values is an E.L.I.A.S race during physical education lessons, where teams have to search for certain clues and items. Teams will be judged based on the core values they exhibit and apply during the race.

Random Acts of Kindness
To further develop Eliasian’s social awareness, the PEACE Idol will work with teachers in the Pupil Development Department to promote ‘acts of small kindness’ among all pupils during Kindness Week.

The PEACE Idol project has provided Eliasians with opportunities for leadership, involvement in decision-making roles for the improvement and development of their individual talents. Elias Park Primary School hopes that it will boost the self-esteem of Eliasians and further inspire them to realise their potential and achieve excellence in character development.
