Celebrating The Teacher
Being a teacher is like taking a journey - a journey with many milestones . In this issue of Contact, we trace the steps in this journey and celebrate a few of the milestones. To all our readers who are educators, Happy Teachers’ Day! Enjoy the journey.

Day in, day out, you labour to make a difference in the lives of your students. Teaching may seem like a thankless job sometimes, but do know that you are appreciated. May these tributes encourage you to press on, because you do make a difference.

My teacher, Mrs Jane Chan, has all these qualities. She is really a true teacher, one who inspires me the most and changes my life. Now there is meaning in my life - to do my best and be the best.

An ex-student remembers

THIRTEEN years ago, I was a Secondary Five Normal student, and I was not at all confident of doing well in my O levels. I did not pay much attention to my studies and had to repeat Secondary Five. One of my dreams was to pursue a diploma programme at the polytechnic. My teachers stood by me, they gave me the support and encouragement, and I worked hard under their guidance. With their help, I succeeded and lived my dream of going to Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

In school, I learnt important values and life skills like perseverance, persistence and a never-say-die attitude. I came to realise that failures are not obstacles, they are just stepping-stones to success. These skills came in useful when I left school and I worked my way up to the post of manager in a company dealing with frozen foods. Now I am the chief executive officer of my own company with branches not only in Singapore but also in India, China, Malaysia and Indonesia.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my teachers who have given me knowledge, courage and support. I thank them for their confidence in me and for never giving up hope in me though at times I felt like giving up on myself.
